Andy Dalton looking forward to seeing Bill Lazor’s offensive changes

Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor has spent the offseason revamping the Bengals’ playbook. No one knows exactly what the changes entail, not even Andy Dalton. But the quarterback can’t wait to get started.

The sense I’m getting is there is going to be a lot of change and a lot of learning, which is a good thing, Dalton said, via Geoff Hobson of the team website. I think it’s good to challenge yourself and kind of re-fresh yourself on what you’re doing. When you’re hearing the same thing for seven straight years, it can be mundane and you already know it. Now it’s new and fresh, and I’m looking forward to it.

Like Jeter, Mattingly spent his entire playing career with the Yankees. He was appointed captain by owner George Steinbrenner from 1991-95, a role held by Jeter from 2003-14.

It’s like growing up in the same family with the same parents, Mattingly said. We both came through the system. You know what’s expected. There’s a way to go about your business, and I think that’s what Derek is bringing to the organization.

That said, neither Rapoport nor Garafolo believes Wednesday’s reports represent a ploy by Brady to expedite those talks. In fact, Brady’s public statements on the matter have left no doubt that he intends to return for a 19th NFL season.

While the offseason has brought unprecedented speculation about Tom Brady ‘s future in New England, owner Robert Kraft recently noted that neither side has an issue with the future Hall of Famer’s contract.

If it becomes an issue, Kraft added, we’ll deal with it.

The Patriots might find themselves dealing with the matter sooner than Kraft imagined.

When you look at the locker room and see the guys we have, obviously when Jo [Embiid] gets back, the sky’s the limit, Ilyasova said.

That’s how it felt after Game 1. After the four years of losing. After extending this 17-game win streak that has the entire city buzzing. It has been a hell of a year in Philadelphia already, with the Eagles winning the Super Bowl and Villanova coasting to its second NCAA title in three years. It’s also too soon to get ahead of the process for these young Sixers.

NFL Draft 2018: Howie Roseman says Eagles are ‘open for business’ to trade back

There are plenty of prospects who make sense for the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 32 in the 2018 NFL Draft, but if the team is bent on collecting Day Two picks, of which they currently have none, personnel chief Howie Roseman is all ears for trade offers. He said as much while meeting with Philadelphia media on Thursday, telling reporters we’re open for business.

Roseman, of course, went on to note that the Eagles aren’t going to shun anyone making offers in any round of the draft, and he also didn’t rule out the team simply making a pick at No. 32, as PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski wrote. We’re open for business in every round — if it’s something that we think makes sense for our team, we’re going to do it, he said. But at the same time, we’re ready to pick. We have 32 guys we feel really good about. We can’t operate under the assumption that we’re going to bail out, so we’re ready to roll.

Steve Somers has been absent of late and some of his fans have noticed, but it was just an extended vacation. He was scheduled to return Wednesday evening, but he is under the weather, so that may be delayed a few days, according to WFAN’s Mark Chernoff. Meanwhile, overnight host Tony Paige has been dealing with a medical issue, and Chernoff said he is due back soon as well. … Islanders TV play-by-player Brendan Burke will work playoffs again for NBC Sports Network. He starts with Sharks and Ducks. … HBO’s Andre the Giant documentary premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m.

But being thinner and trimmer can only help Prescott in what owner Jerry Jones describes as a Dak-friendly offense in 2018 that includes college-like spread schemes.

It’s an offense that lets him be unpredictable. It gives him the best way to be hard for the defense in the sense of game planning for him, owner Jerry Jones said last month. I’d certainly love for him to be able to hurt them from the pocket. We’d love for him to be able to hurt them on the run, and to run. We’re not necessarily interested in increasing the number of runs.

He added that MLB has a commitment to building a stronger connection between young people and the national pastime.

Yeah, sure. Then it was back to creating or at least approving schedules that eliminate weekend afternoon games.

Does Manfred, gut to head, not know that this is wrong? Does he not know that this should not be done to baseball nor should he be the one who does it?

Or is he good with being known as the kid-loving commissioner who allowed the elimination of Saturday afternoon baseball? Can’t shame the shameless.

Rusty Staub used to sigh when he saw me coming. Or was it a shudder? Never a fast runner, he was stuck, either way.

This will be the first time the Big Ten plays a 20-game conference schedule.

In a release, Big Ten assistant commissioner Kenny Kerry said there will be an annual rotation among the league’s four Eastern-most league members (Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers) with the new formula. From Kerry’s comments:

Rather than protecting a single opponent on a yearly basis for the remaining eight teams, annual rotations involving the four eastern teams (Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers) and the four western teams (Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin) have been strategically developed to optimize travel, academic and recovery impacts while encouraging increased competition among institutions that are near each other geographically. Increasing the frequency of conference competition allows the Big Ten to compete across a larger footprint, while respecting history and balancing the needs of our students, coaches and fans.

Took just one day for the latter-day absurdity to return.

Red Sox-Rays opener Thursday. Boston led, 4-0, after six, which is when starter Chris Sale was removed. In came reliever Matt Barnes, who pitched a 1, 2, 3 inning.

Still, new Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought in Joe Kelly in the eighth. In one-third of an inning he allowed a hit, three walks and was charged with four earned runs.

With Joe Flacco struggling in recent seasons, the Baltimore Ravens might be looking to the future. The Ravens already added Robert Griffin III to the quarterback room and could import a rookie in next week’s draft.

For his part, the longtime starter isn’t fretting over the possibility of general manager Ozzie Newsome using his final first-round pick on a quarterback.

Brandon Coleman is staying in New Orleans.

The wideout is re-signing with the Saints , a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The team chose not to tender Coleman as a restricted free agent, making him free to sign with another team.

It also helped Houston’s cause that Minnesota’s other All-Star, center Karl-Anthony Towns, had the kind of awful playoff debut that will invite a lot of criticism during the three long days before Game 2. Towns was oddly an afterthought offensively, scoring only eight points on 3-of-9 shooting.

I’ve got to be better on both sides of the basketball [court], Towns said.
